When connecting an inverter, MultiPlus, or Quattro, the capacitors inside the device can generate a significant spark. This spark is visible when making the final connection. If you use a main switch as the final connection, the spark will jump internally within the switch. Due to this momentary high current, the switch contacts can burn out (become defective) or the battery poles and connection terminals on the device can be damaged. It is better to give a quick “tap” with the cable on a surface where damage remains very limited (for example, a busbar or fuse).
The truly correct solution is to use a “pre-charge resistor.” This resistor is used to establish a connection first before closing the main switch. Bridging for a few seconds via a pushbutton with a resistor of, for example, 50 watts-25 ohms can entirely prevent both sparks and damage!
